Thoughts From The Beach

Written by on May 6, 2020

We moved to the beach in February and since then, I have walked to the beach almost daily. Over the past two weeks, between the weather and various other things I haven’t made it there. Yesterday I finally carved out a little time in my schedule and went for a walk. For this week’s blog, I thought I’d share a couple of thoughts that crossed my mind while I was wandering.

Little Things Leave a Big Impact

I came across these little mounds, that were visible across the whole beach. When I looked a little closer, I saw that they were shells. We have had some crazy weather in South Australia and the shells have been tossed around and broken. Most of them are not lying flat in the sand and the sand has blown in drifts across them creating mounds that are impacting the look of the whole beach.

We Always Have Something To Offer

I found this really fascinating. It reminds me so much of us and the little things we do that we think don’t matter. It’s often the small things that make a big difference in people’s life. Sometimes we don’t act because we don’t think we have anything that would make a difference, but it really is the little things.

Recently I shared that someone I don’t know had left a handmade card in our letterbox. It was just a beautiful encouraging thing to do that, I still think about daily. That small action had a significant impact. Look out for the small things that you can do. Notice someone’s new top, make someone a cup of tea, message them unexpectedly.

This is the path that we take to the beach. It is at the end of a long flight of stairs. As I looked at it, I saw just how many footsteps, paw prints and otherwise had gone before me. And I thought, no matter where I go, or what I try someone has always been there before me.

Listen To Those Who Have Gone Before

There is something to be said for following in the footsteps of others and listening to their wisdom. Make your own way for sure, innovate, try new things but don’t be too proud to listen to the advice of those who have gone before.

That’s a hard thing for me. I like to try to do it all on my own and forge ahead without help from anyone. I am often quite convinced that I know best. Even when I know I need to ask for help, I still resist.

As I stood there looking at that path with so many footprints on it – I thought about how far I have come because of the people I have in my life and their wisdom. I also thought about big changes in my life that are happening this year. I have applied for uni and that is a scary thing. If I don’t look to the people that have walked the path before me it will make the path much harder to travel.

So that was my beach wandering thoughts for you – Little things leave a much bigger impact on others than you think and look for the people that have gone before you. They definitely learned things along the way that can help you out.
