Love, Loyalty & Fate, the dancing steps of West Side Story 2019

Theatre company; Opera Australia has set out to put together the largest and most thrilling production of musical theatre in Australia with their retelling of West Side Story and after seeing it; it is safe to say that they have done a magnificent job.

Through a confluence of inventive set design and depictive dance choreography; Opera Australia’s 2019 production of West Side Story is a sight for sore eyes and serenity for the ears. It has a cast of young but talented actors whose energetic and sincere performances’ are more than enough to keep you entertained throughout the performance.

Particular praise has to be given to the set designers whose wonderfully original and multipurpose set design is one of the more creative put to stage. The set serves as everything from a shop corner to a underpass and manages to really sell the illusion of the dirty 20th Century New York streets the characters find themselves in.

The singing and dancing talent was also superb; with its energy and descriptive choreography which actively served to convey the story and characters without detracting from the story. The draw back to the cast was a lack of star power which left the performance with no particularly outstanding moments. The lack of star power worked admirably for a well rounded cast performance but it didn’t leave any particularly lasting or memorable impressions.

Overall, West Side Story 2019 is a fun and exiting performance that is well worth your time if you are a fan of musical theatre. It is more suitable for young adults and up with a few depictions of adult themes.
