The Hitching Post
When you think of getting married, do you picture just you and a handful of your closest loved ones on a white sandy beach, with sweetly scented breezes rustling the flowers in your hair? Or landing from a helicopter onto a snow covered glacier and saying your “I Do’s” on top of a mountain with majestic eagles for witnesses?
There are no hard and fast rules as to what a ‘normal’ wedding needs to be anymore – the only limits are your imagination, creativity and budget to some extent. The strictures of being married in a white dress, in the chapel of your hometown no longer seem to apply in this new interconnected world, where partners, families and friends can live in all four corners of the globe.
Destination weddings are where a couple celebrates their marriage at a destination of their choice away from home. It’s like going on your honeymoon with a ceremony at the start! Typical locales are Bali, the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii and Europe. Given the distance from home, many family members and friends are unlikely to be able to attend – which may be part of the attraction! On the other hand, choosing a central location on the globe may allow more people to travel less distance to attend.
The most common question I hear from brides in relation to getting married overseas is whether the costs are likely to be less than getting married at home. The answer – possibly, yes, it depends! There are a multitude of resorts in gorgeous locations that offer reasonably priced wedding packages – including ceremony, celebrant, reception dinner, flowers, photographer – all you need is a dress and a marriage license valid for that country. The major cost will be airfares and accommodation – and if you are only paying for yourselves (not Aunty Sue, Nanna and 4 cousins) then your costs may be quite low – and you are saving money on a separate honeymoon, because you are effectively already there!
Is a destination wedding right for you? Only you can answer that one, but if you love adventure, and are happy with a small group of loved ones to celebrate with, then maybe! You can always throw a post-wedding party when you get back home for all those who weren’t able to come.
