The Hitching Post
Living and loving in the moment
We are all well ensconced in the ‘silly’ season, and boy, does it get crazy! So many events, expectations and ridiculously long queues in the shopping centre car park!
So, for the minute it will take you to read this post – sit, relax and take some deep breaths.
We all need a little reminder that Christmas is a time of giving, yes, but the attitude of the giver is more important that any gift. It’s a time of teaching our children that giving gifts should be an everyday attitude of loving those around us. Of being kind to strangers, of sharing our wealth with those less fortunate. The wonderous gift of baby Jesus in a manger and God’s infinite love, over wrapping paper and Santa.
In the time of year that we are most busy ‘doing’, maybe what many people really need is our love and focussed attention; our ‘being’. Let’s try continually to live in each moment (fast as they may come), and love on every person we come into contact with in these next hectic weeks. Make eye contact, really hear people – with our ears and our hearts to see what they are saying. Doing that might help out with a few gift ideas too.
On a practical note, make time to stop and slow your thinking down, and write lists so you don’t have to hold it all in your head. Delegate things to other family members, and if they don’t turn out quite right, so what? Things don’t have to be perfect. Don’t buy gifts for every person you know just in case they give you one – have some nice blank cards handy so you can write them a heartfelt thank-you note after Christmas. It will be far more valued than another box of shortbread or chocolates.
Don’t forget, smiles are free.
